Glendale Junior Lifeguard Academy 2026

Course Description:

The Junior Lifeguard Academy is a dynamic, hands-on educational program designed to introduce youth ages 12 to 14 to the fundamentals of lifeguarding and aquatic safety.

This program equips participants with a foundation of knowledge, skills, and confidence to take the next step, enrolling in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course once they become eligible at age 15.

Throughout this Junior Lifeguard course, participants are introduced to key American Red Cross principles, including Community First Aid and Safety, Water Safety Instructor Aide skills, and essential lifeguarding rescue skills and techniques. Students spend time in the classroom as well as in the water, learning and practicing effective surveillance and scanning methods, recognition and prevention of potential hazards, and development of proficiency in basic rescue skills such as reaching assists.

In addition to skill development, at the conclusion of the 2-week course, Junior Lifeguards gain valuable real-world experience through a required minimum of 20 volunteer hours at Pacific Community Pool. During this time, participants work alongside lifeguard staff and are always closely supervised, allowing them to observe professional practices, assist with appropriate tasks, and build a deeper understanding of lifeguard responsibilities.

The program gives participants a clear introduction to lifeguard responsibilities, helping them explore the role and decide whether they’d like to pursue lifeguarding in the future.

Prerequisites:

Participants must be proficient swimmers with the ability to tread water for at least 1 minute continuously. Instructors will evaluate participants on the first day, and any safety concerns will be addressed.
